Heading into spring practice, Alabama football was already facing depth concerns at the tight end position. Unfortunately, that situation worsened, as head coach Kalen DeBoer announced on Friday that the Crimson Tide had lost two more tight ends to injury for the remainder of the spring.
Danny Lewis Jr. had already been ruled out for the entire spring, but DeBoer revealed that Josh Cuevas and Marshall Pritchett are now also sidelined. Cuevas is expected to return in the fall, but he and Lewis were projected to take on major roles after Alabama lost its two primary tight ends, CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts to the NFL Draft process.

As it stands, Alabama now has only one scholarship tight end available for spring practices: redshirt freshman Jay Lindsey. The absence of key players at the position has forced the coaching staff to get creative during scrimmages. DeBoer explained that the offensive and defensive units are collaborating to make the most out of practice, including using players in unfamiliar positions and experimenting with substitutions.
Despite the lack of depth, DeBoer remains optimistic about the situation and is focused on adapting the team’s approach in the short term.
In addition to tight end issues, DeBoer provided updates on other players dealing with injuries. Freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams missed Friday’s scrimmage and is expected to have limited participation for the remainder of the spring due to minor injuries.
DeBoer also shared encouraging news regarding defensive back Keon Sabb, who missed the end of the 2024 season with a lower-body injury. The coach reported that Sabb is recovering well and is on track to return. He praised Sabb’s resilience and determination, referencing the tough stretch Sabb played through during the previous fall, particularly around the Tennessee game. DeBoer emphasized the respect Sabb has earned from both coaches and teammates for his toughness.
Alabama’s spring practice will continue through April 12, culminating in an open session at Bryant-Denny Stadium for A-Day. Unlike past years, A-Day in 2025 will not feature a traditional game or scrimmage format and will not be broadcast on television.
