The 2025 NFL Draft is just over three weeks away, set to take place in Green Bay, and it promises to be an exciting time for former Virginia Tech football players. Since wrapping up their college careers with a bowl-eligible win over Virginia on Thanksgiving Weekend at Lane Stadium, several Hokies have been impressing scouts at all-star showcases, the NFL Combine, and Pro Day events.
Among those turning heads is running back Bhayshul Tuten, whose strong performance at the NFL Combine has helped boost his draft stock. While it’s still unclear exactly where he and others will be selected, there’s growing buzz around multiple former Hokies, with one in particular making notable strides on ESPN’s positional rankings.
Wide receiver Jaylin Lane has emerged as a standout prospect, currently ranked by ESPN as the 11th-best wide receiver entering the draft. His performance at the Reese’s Senior Bowl helped elevate his profile, as he outshined several more widely known receivers. Lane continued to impress at the NFL Combine, where his athleticism was on full display. Analyst Steve Muench praised Lane’s showing, noting that he finished in the top three among wide receivers in several key categories, including the 10-yard split (1.5 seconds), 40-yard dash (4.34 seconds), broad jump (11 feet), vertical jump (40 inches), 20-yard shuttle (4.12 seconds), and 3-cone drill (6.75 seconds).
Muench described Lane as a “dynamic player” with versatility—highlighting his ability to catch, run, pass, and return punts, including a punt return touchdown in 2024. He commended Lane’s quickness, ability to accelerate through openings, break tackles, and follow blocks. Lane also flashed potential as a route runner and possesses large hands relative to his frame, making him a reliable pass catcher.
Virginia Tech fans would agree with Muench’s assessment, having seen Lane consistently deliver explosive plays over the past couple of seasons. While most projections place him as a Day 3 selection, there’s speculation he could climb into the late Day 2 range if his momentum continues.
As the draft approaches, both Tuten and Lane have positioned themselves as intriguing prospects to watch, with the potential to surprise analysts and fans alike come draft day.
