During the MLB offseason, Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm was the subject of numerous trade rumors, particularly tied to his role at third base. Although those discussions have quieted as the season progressed, some analysts still believe Bohm could be moved before the trade deadline. Conor Liguori of Athlon Sports recently floated the idea of the Phillies trading Bohm to the Detroit Tigers in a deal that could benefit both teams.
Liguori’s proposed trade centers around the Phillies acquiring relief pitcher José Vest from the Tigers. Vest has proven himself as a valuable bullpen asset, especially under postseason pressure. In the most recent playoffs, Vest pitched six innings across six appearances, giving up only one earned run and striking out nine batters. His consistent production over the past two seasons includes a strong 146 ERA+ and an average of more than eight strikeouts per nine innings. With Philadelphia looking to strengthen its bullpen—particularly with October baseball in mind—Vest could be a critical addition for the stretch run.
As part of the deal, Detroit would also send versatile infielder Isan Ibáñez to the Phillies. Ibáñez made a strong impression during the American League Wild Card Series against the Houston Astros, showcasing both offensive and defensive capabilities. Offensively, he achieved a career-best OPS of 103 in 2023, while his 2024 defensive performance included saving four runs and earning an Outs Above Average (OAA) of six. Notably, Ibáñez brings flexibility to the field, having played every position except catcher, which could be valuable for the Phillies’ roster depth.
Despite the merits of the trade, the Phillies are not under pressure to part ways with Bohm. There is no immediate logjam at third base, and Bohm remains an integral part of Philadelphia’s lineup due to his offensive production. While the team could certainly benefit from enhancing its bullpen, especially as they gear up for a potential postseason run, moving a key hitter like Bohm would require a particularly enticing return. The front office would likely need to be convinced that such a trade would offer a clear upgrade in another critical area of the team.
In summary, while the concept of trading Alec Bohm to the Tigers remains a possibility, it appears more speculative than imminent. Any potential deal would have to bring substantial value in return, particularly if it involves weakening a key part of the Phillies’ offense. For now, Bohm’s presence in Philadelphia remains secure, but the trade conversation may continue as the deadline nears.
