HUGE BOOST: For the second time in two days, the Virginia Tech Hokies add depth to the trenches.

In a span of just two days, the Virginia Tech Hokies have bolstered their roster with two key additions to their line positions, enhancing both offensive and defensive depth. On Wednesday, the team secured a commitment from Kody Huisman, a former defensive tackle at North Dakota State.

The following day, offensive line coach Matt Moore added a familiar face to his unit, bringing in Gavin Crawford, a transfer from his previous school, West Virginia University (WVU). Crawford, who had been enrolled at WVU since January and spent the spring semester there, announced his decision to transfer to Virginia Tech. He becomes part of the Hokies’ 2025 recruiting class. Crawford, a three-star recruit out of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland, is a promising addition with four full years of eligibility ahead of him. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 300 pounds, he adds size and potential to an offensive line in transition. His Maryland roots are also noteworthy, as Coach Moore has established strong recruiting connections in that region over the years. With this move, Crawford joins three other former Mountaineers—Tomas Rimac, Kyle Altuner, and Lucas Austin—who have followed Moore to Blacksburg as part of a growing group of WVU transfers.

Virginia Tech’s offensive line will look dramatically different in the upcoming season, as the team faces the challenge of replacing all five starters from last year. Brody Meadows, who served as a part-time starter previously, is expected to step into one of the starting guard positions. Tomas Rimac, a former All-Big 12 selection at WVU, is projected to start and bring veteran experience to the line. Kyle Altuner appears to be the leading candidate to take over at center, while Lucas Austin and Gavin Crawford are expected to offer valuable depth. These changes come after the Hokies lost two starting offensive linemen to the transfer portal, including standout left tackle Xavier Chaplin, who departed for Auburn.

Coach Moore, who joined Virginia Tech after coaching at WVU, continues to make use of his former connections to strengthen the Hokies’ offensive front. His familiarity with the players and their development paths gives him a unique advantage as he rebuilds the line. Given the recent activity and the ongoing spring transfer portal window, Moore might not be finished bringing in more of his former WVU linemen.

The recent additions of Huisman and Crawford mark Virginia Tech’s first transfer commitments of the spring window. These moves signal a clear intent to reinforce both sides of the line with experienced talent and promising recruits. As the Hokies aim to solidify their roster before the next season, these strategic transfers could play a significant role in shaping the team’s success in the trenches.
