On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns said that Mike Bloomgren, the head coach at Rice, would be their new offensive line coach.

Following a 24-52 record that dates back to 2018, the 47-year-old head coach, who had been guiding Rice for the previous seven years, was removed of his duties this past October.
“Mike is very intelligent and has a lot of knowledge,” head coach Kevin Stefanski stated via Cleveland Browns.com. He has worked in several pro-style schemes at the collegiate level in addition to his NFL experience. Our offensive line room will benefit greatly from his success as a teacher and motivator. Mike is a welcome addition to our coaching staff.”

Bloomgren spent a couple of seasons in the NFL from 2007 to 2010, but he has more collegiate coaching experience than NFL coaching.

“He made the move to the NFL in 2007 when he joined the Jets staff as an offensive quality control coach for two seasons and worked under Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan,” said Kelsey Russo, a staff writer for the Cleveland Browns. When Rex Ryan took over as head coach of the Jets in 2009, he then transitioned into an offensive assistant position. During his tenure as assistant offensive coordinator in 2010, the Jets averaged almost 23 points per game and finished with an 11-5 record.

Bill Callahan should be well-known to many Cleveland Browns fans. Before departing to work with his son Brian Callahan with the Tennessee Titans this past offseason, he spent four seasons as the offensive line coach for the Browns.

The hiring of an offensive line coach who previously worked with Callahan should give Browns supporters hope that the team is on the right track after their offensive line declined during the previous season.

The selection of an offensive coordinator is the final step in Cleveland’s coaching hiring process. In 2025, hopefully, the Browns’ offensive performance will improve.
