This summer, the Falcons acquired a number of coaches from the Rams staff, most notably Zac Robinson and Raheem Morris.
Zac Robinson was Sean McVay’s quarterbacks coach, and Morris spent three years as the Rams defensive coordinator before being hired the Falcons head coach.
The Rams organization had a gap after Robinson was hired by the Falcons as their offensive coordinator, and they returned the favor by bringing in Dave Ragone, the previous offensive coordinator of the Falcons, to replace it.
During the three years under Arthur Smith, Ragone served as the offensive coordinator for the Falcons. Working with the quarterbacks was his main duty because he wasn’t calling plays—Smith was. Although the outcomes don’t exactly speak highly of him, I doubt anyone could have assisted in the development of players like Taylor Heinicke, Desmond Ridder, and Marcus Mariota into capable starting quarterbacks.
In Tennessee, Ragone started his NFL coaching career as the wide receivers coach. Two years later, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Prior to joining the Falcons staff, he was the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Chicago Bears from 2016 to 2020.
Now that he is teaching Matthew Stafford under Sean McVay in Los Angeles, Ragone will have another chance to establish himself. For a coach looking to climb back up the ranks, it’s a golden chance.
Ragone received a lot of criticism for the lack of success in Atlanta, along with Arthur Smith, but the former offensive coordinator for the Falcons, joining McVay in Los Angeles, should soon elevate his profile. Ragone might be the next thing McVay touches that turns to gold.
