Chris Gilbert, the head coach’s special assistant, is back in Texas.
After two years on the Forty Acres, the former head coach of Lancaster spent the previous season as an assistant at North Texas.

After serving as the North Texas Mean Green’s tight ends coach and assistant head coach for a single season, Gilbert will rejoin the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday as a special assistant to head coach Steve Sarkisian.
After Sarkisian took over as Texas’ head coach in 2021, Gilbert—a South Oak Cliff alumni who had coached at his alma mater, Terrell, and Lancaster—was brought on board as director of high school relations.
In December, Sarkisian reminisced about “the first time we were employed, hiring Chris Gilbert and the work he did for us in recruiting, A, B, the connection to the high school coaches.” “Coach Gilbert did a great job in my opinion as a new coach in the state of Texas with that connection to the coaches.” What outcome did it have? He was given the opportunity to coach full-time at North Texas.
Gilbert made an impression as a recruiter for the Longhorns before departing for the Mean Green. Sarkisian signed the consensus No. 5 recruiting class in 2022 and the consensus No. 3 recruiting class in 2023, which featured players from the Metroplex, including DJ Campbell of Arlington Bowie, Cam Williams of Duncanville, Johntay Cook of DeSoto, Anthony Hill Jr. of Denton Ryan, and Malik Muhammad of South Oak Cliff.
