The Detroit Lions have officially missed out on a highly regarded free agent who many believed would have been a perfect addition to their defense—Osa Odighizuwa. According to insider Ari Meirov, Odighizuwa has agreed to a lucrative four-year, $80 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys, averaging $20 million per season.
After an impressive 2024 campaign where he recorded 4.5 sacks, 47 tackles, and 23 quarterback hits, Odighizuwa solidified himself as one of the most effective interior defensive linemen on the market. His ability to disrupt plays and generate pressure made him a highly sought-after player in free agency.
ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz previously identified Odighizuwa as a game-changing addition for the Lions, particularly given their struggles along the defensive line. Detroit has dealt with injuries at the position, and with Levi Onwuzurike potentially departing in free agency, there’s a clear need for reinforcements.
Odighizuwa’s relentless motor and pass-rushing skills from the interior would have been a perfect complement to Alim McNeill. His presence would have provided much-needed depth and helped fortify a defensive front that lacked consistent pressure in key moments last season. Unfortunately for the Lions, they’ll now have to look elsewhere to address these needs.
It remains unclear whether the Lions seriously pursued Odighizuwa in free agency. However, with his signing off the table, the team must now explore other options to strengthen their defensive line before the 2025 season.
One major decision looming is whether Detroit will attempt to re-sign Onwuzurike. If he chooses to walk, it will leave a significant void in the depth chart. Additionally, if his asking price is too high, the Lions may opt to invest in a more affordable free agent or turn to the 2025 NFL Draft to find a long-term solution.
General manager Brad Holmes will likely explore multiple avenues to address the defensive line, whether through veteran signings or selecting a top prospect in the draft. With expectations high for the upcoming season, finding a reliable playmaker to bolster the front seven remains a top priority.
Though Odighizuwa would have been an excellent fit, the Lions still have time to make impactful moves that could elevate their defense in 2025.
