Yankees Set to Sign All-Star Infielder After Losing Out on Sasaki

MLB analyst Bryan Jaeger of Call to the Pen believes the New York Yankees should sign Alex Bregman.

After missing out on impact pitcher Roki Sasaki, Jaeger believes New York should make another impact move. One potential move is to add an infielder, either a second or third baseman, depending on where Jazz Chisholm Jr. plays.

Ultimately, Bregman addresses a number of needs for the Yankees, which is why Jaeger believes the team should sign the two-time All-Star.

“I am surprised Alex Bregman is still available. Bregman could play the hot corner and allow Chisholm Jr. to return to his natural position at second base,” Jaeger wrote. “Bregman, too, would be the “splash” acquisition that supporters are hoping for. Assuming they can overlook his relationship with a bitter adversary. The third baseman has spent nine years with the Houston Astros. Last season, he hit .260/.315/.453, with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs.

In 2024, Baseball Savant put Bregman in the 96th percentile in squared-up percentage, indicating he would have many opportunities to contribute ahead of Aaron Judge in the lineup… Bregman has been a popular name in the rumour mill, but if the Yankees can acquire him and/or Scott, it would be a home run acquisition, leaving supporters content and enthusiastic about the 2025 season,” Jaeger added.

Bregman would be a middle-of-the-order bat for the Yankees, helping to stabilize the infield, according to Jaeger. He won the Gold Glove Award this season, and he also helped Houston win the World Series in 2017 and 2022.

Yankees’ Checked in on Bregman

New York has expressed interest in Bregman, according to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who claims the team spoke with Scott Boras about him.

Bregman was connected to the Yankees at the start of the offseason, but nothing came of it.

New York has expressed interest in Bregman, according to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who claims the team spoke with Scott Boras about him.

Bregman was connected to the Yankees at the start of the offseason, but nothing came from it.

“My job is to make us as quality as we can year in and year out,” Cashman told the reporters on December 13. “We’ll look at every opportunity. First and foremost, we shall determine whether that can match. He’s been a thorn in our and others’ sides for years. He’s presently a free agent.

“I’m sure he has a lot of options, and really good players like him earn a lot of money.” Cashman continued, “I’ve had a couple of conversations with Scott Boras.” “I will confess that with several of his clients, including Alex Bregman. Certainly respect the player and his abilities, as well as the amount of winning he has contributed to. But, that is as far as I will say at this point.”

Bregman has a .238 batting average, 19 home runs, and 54 RBIs across 99 playoff games.

New York Likely to Put Chisholm Jr at Second

The Yankees will need a third baseman, as Chisholm is slated to move to second.

Brendan Kuty, a Yankees reporter for The Athletic, believes Chisholm will start at second base on Opening Day.

“The Yankees very certainly prefer Chisholm at second base. Which was his principal position in the major leagues from 2020 to 2022,” Kuty stated. “He was an All-Star second baseman for the Miami Marlins in 2022, but an injury ended his season after 60 games. He’s most likely more at ease there than he is at third base. (Which is) where the Yankees put him for the first time in his career after his trade deadline arrival. According to Statcast, he had 8 more outs than the norm in 45 regular season games. Chisholm has the talent and work ethic to stay at the position if the Yankees determine it’s the best option.”

Chisholm hit.256 with 24 home runs and 73 RBIs last season.
