With several important players expected to become free agents this summer, the Houston Texans will have a hectic offseason. But it seems like at least one of those players is planning a comeback. Tight end Dalton Schultz and the Texans both want to work together going forward, and Schultz “will be back” on the team in 2024, according to KPRC 2 sources.
The franchise tag is worth $11.3 million, so even though the Texans don’t usually use it, Schultz might be a possibility if a deal isn’t done by the deadline. Schultz, a well-liked downfield target, caught 59 passes for 635 yards and five touchdowns on 88 targets in the previous campaign. After playing with the Dallas Cowboys for five seasons, Schultz chose to sign a one-year contract with the Texans, where he became the third-leading receiver on the club.
According to Spotrac, the Texans have a whooping $70 million in expected cap space, which gives them plenty of money to perhaps give Schultz the big contract he was vying for last season. “It’s a little cat-and-mouse game, so you just try to take the information in, have a general understanding of the market and try to make a good decision,” Texans General Manager Nick Caserio said in reference to the significance of taking the franchise tag’s fixed value into consideration.
