KC Chiefs’ First Wave of 2024 Free Agency Has Been a Success
This week marks the formal start of free agency, and the Kansas City Chiefs have been busy, moving quickly.
Fans should take heart from this since it appears the team is all in to try to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowl titles. A few of their most popular stories from the first week of free agency are seen here.
Chiefs get Chris Jones back
The Chiefs announced on Sunday night that Chris Jones would be returning to the team. On Monday, the team officially announced the huge contract. Over the first three years of the five-year contract, Jones is guaranteed just over $95 million in salary.
For the athlete and the squad, this is very exciting news. After yet another fantastic season in which the Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl, Jones rose to become the highest-paid defensive tackle in history. With its defensive line leader and focal point back, Kansas City may be able to retire as a Chief. Jones doesn’t appear to be slowing down in terms of pressure or output anytime soon; if he can continue to perform well for the next three years, everyone will benefit.
Re-signing several other defensive linemen
The Chiefs concluded that simply having Chris Jones return would not be sufficient. Jones’s main backup, Tershawn Wharton, is returning on a $2.75 million, one-year contract. Another defensive lineman on rotation, Mike Pennel, will also rejoin the team. Jones will be rejoined by Derrick Nnadi, who has started every game during the Chiefs’ previous two regular seasons (17 games total).
When the Chiefs attempt to run the ball back in 2024, it appears that they will be well-positioned up front on the defensive side of the ball with lots of depth.
Kansas City says goodbye to some old friends
The Chiefs can’t bring everyone back. It would be impossible to do so with salary cap restrictions and sometimes, certain players have outplayed what the team can afford. There are also times when a player doesn’t play up to expectations and their time naturally ends with the team. Here are a few players who moved on during the free agency period:
- Willie Gay Jr.: New Orleans Saints
- Nick Allegretti: Washington Commanders
- Jody Fortson: Miami Dolphins
- Tommy Townsend: Houston Texans
Irv Smith Jr. and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown are Chiefs
Close End The Chiefs will be adding Irv Smith Jr. as a low-risk option. Smith will compete with Noah Gray and maybe a rookie tight end if the Chiefs choose to provide more depth at that position by selecting a player in the 2024 NFL Draft for the backup job.
According to reports, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown will sign a one-year contract with the Chiefs worth up to $11 million and $7 million. Brown was one of my top wide receiver targets for the Chiefs, so this is a perfect fit. Along with providing Patrick Mahomes with a deep threat, he will be a great addition to Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice. Additionally, head coach Andy Reid has demonstrated his ability to play well in the screen game at the line of scrimmage.
In relation to Reid, Brown revealed a text exchange between the two of them, suggesting that Reid might have completed the transaction. Following the announcement of the contract, Brown further won over Chiefs supporters by performing live on Twitch and covering several of their favorite songs, such as “Red Kingdom,” “Swag Surfin’,” and even “Blank Space,” a smash song by Taylor Swift. This fits like a lot of fun.
The Chiefs have already made a number of wise decisions to put themselves in position to be the favorites to return and win another Super Bowl, even though free agency and the official league season have only just began. It’s unheard of for a club in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, but I wouldn’t rule out the Chiefs dynasty.
