Just In: Zac Robinson appeared to be Raheem Morris’ selling pitch to the Falcons

The Falcons appeared to be in the clear to employ Bill Belichick throughout the most of the process, but then an unexpected revelation from Adam Schefter revealed Raheem Morris would be joining the team.

Gambling sites, NFL insiders, and the general public all saw Belichick as the favorite. Josina Anderson even went so far as to say that she thought the Falcons would sign Belichick, while Jonathan Jones said that Arthur Blank was eager to hire him as well. It was Belichick’s job to lose, by all accounts.

But there were whispers and allegations of internal disagreements among the search committee over whether or not to hire Belichick. The search committee claims that Raheem Morris nailed his second interview because the door was left open.

Among other notable things, Morris seemed to have a highly detailed plan, but his ability to get Zac Robinson to Atlanta was one of his biggest selling factors. The cycle’s top contender for offensive coordinator was the former Rams passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Despite several offers to accompany Morris to the Falcons, he declined them.

Morris apparently brought assurances to Rich McKay, Arthur Blank, and the Falcons search committee that Robinson would serve as his offensive coordinator. According to a story from The Athletic, this is true.

“Zac Robinson, the former Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator who had multiple OC interviews elsewhere, is a good sign as Morris’ new offensive coordinator. Robinson always intended to follow Morris if he got a job.”

Robinson had always planned to follow Morris, who made numerous interviews for openings and undoubtedly sold Robinson to other organizations. Both wind up in Atlanta with the Falcons, and while Robinson’s development at quarterback is still far from complete, it should help a great deal.
