The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that head coach Sheldon Keefe has signed a multi-year contract extension.
Athletic Sportflash According to Elliotte Friedman, the agreement is a two-year extension. In 2023–2024, Keefe was going into his last year under contract. Brad Treliving, general manager of the Leafs, verified the phrase on Wednesday’s video conference with reporters.
During the video conference, Treliving stated, “I believe Sheldon is a top coach.” “You want to hang onto decent people while you have them. I believe we have a good coach here, therefore this gets done.”
On November 20, 2019, Keefe, who had previously coached Toronto’s AHL affiliate, the Marlies, was appointed head coach to succeed Mike Babcock. Keefe’s record in his four seasons with the Maple Leafs is 166-71-30. Toronto is now fourth in the NHL with a.622 winning percentage throughout that span.
Treliving, who was hired in June, continued, “Since I’ve joined the Maple Leafs, I’ve been very impressed with Sheldon,” in a statement released by the group. He has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities with both his staff and our players, and he has a clear idea of where he wants to see this team go. As we approach the new season, Sheldon has shown to be one of the league’s best coaches, and I am forward to collaborate with him.
In a statement, Keefe stated, “Coaching this team has been a great privilege, and I’m truly excited at the opportunity to continue building towards our ultimate goal.” “I appreciate the help and encouragement I’ve received from MLSE and its management, as well as from Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving, with whom I’ve had a great pleasure working this off-season. I’m honored to work with so many amazing players and individuals in our organization, and we are all unwavering in our commitment to the success of our club.
With a 50-21-11 record, the Maple Leafs placed second in the Atlantic Division in the previous campaign. For its first series victory since 2004, Toronto overcame the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round, but in the second round, the Florida Panthers swept them.
