Three lessons learned: Islanders lose to Hurricanes 5-3 in game two.
Game 2 of the New York Islanders’ First Round series ended in a 5-3 loss at PNC Arena on Monday night. The Islanders could only withstand the Carolina Hurricanes’ storm for so long.
The Islanders now trail the Eastern Conference First Round series, a best-of-seven series, 2-0. They will play Game 3 on Thursday when they return to Long Island.
By 3:54 of the second period, Kyle Palmieri, Bo Horvat, and Anders Lee (PPG) had given the Isles a 3-0 lead. However, the Hurricanes rallied for a win with five goals in a row. The Hurricanes scored four goals in the third period, including the game-tying and game-winning goals nine seconds apart, thanks to goals from Teuvo Teravainen, Seth Jarvis, Sebastian Aho, Jordan Martinook, and Jake Guentzel.
Head Coach Patrick Roy stated, “There is no doubt about it—it is a tough loss.” “We need to regroup and get ready for the next game, but we also had a chance to win that one.”
The Islanders, who also watched a three-goal lead against the Hurricanes in their first meeting on November 4th, lose badly. In their franchise history, the Islanders are 3-11 when trailing 2-0 in a series, including 3-10 when the series begins away from home.
In the defeat, Semyon Varlamov stopped 34 of 38 shots, while in the victory, Frederik Andersen, making his first consecutive start since recovering from a blood clot, stopped 9 of 12 shots.
