Kingerski: Why Penguins’ Mike Sullivan’s Seat Should be Warm

The Pittsburgh Penguins have endured a six-season drought without winning a playoff series and have now missed the playoffs for two consecutive years. This has led to significant scrutiny falling on coach Mike Sullivan.

While much of the criticism originates externally, it nonetheless carries weight. There’s also the possibility of internal pressure mounting against Sullivan. The recent firing of Sheldon Keefe by the Toronto Maple Leafs, despite a contract extension, has fueled speculation. Keefe’s potential departure was long speculated, particularly if Toronto failed to advance past the first round. Given Keefe’s history with Penguins’ management, including President Kyle Dubas, rumors circulated about a potential reunion.

However, it’s unlikely Dubas would pursue such a move, considering the potential backlash and negative consequences. Additionally, it wouldn’t necessarily benefit Keefe to take on lesser roles within the organization. Dubas has the luxury of waiting for potential head coaching vacancies elsewhere before considering Keefe.

Despite this, Sullivan’s position isn’t secure either. While some criticisms of his coaching style and team performance may be external, there are genuine concerns about the team’s lack of preparation on numerous occasions. As the season progressed with continued losses and struggles, these issues became more pronounced.

In summary, while a reunion with Keefe might seem tempting given their history, it’s not a prudent move given the circumstances. However, Sullivan’s future with the Penguins isn’t guaranteed either, as he faces mounting pressure to address the team’s shortcomings and improve their performance.
