Derek Carr: bench or start?: Saints quarterback may play against Buccaneers despite injury.

Derek Carr was expected to miss the New Orleans Saints’ Week 4 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports “optimism” from the franchise.

Carr, 32, sustained a right shoulder injury during the team’s Week 3 loss against the Green Bay Packers. With New Orleans leading, backup quarterback Jameis Winston took over under center, but the opponent rallied.

“Against all odds, there is now optimism that Saints QB Derek Carr (right shoulder) plays against the Bucs, sources say,” Rapoport said on Twitter. “With an AC injury, Carr practiced on a limited basis on Friday.

“The coaches will need to know he can protect himself. But there is a chance.”

Rapoport reported that Carr was limited in practice on Friday and that coaches need to know if the QB can protect himself before deciding on his status for Sunday.
