August 13th: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Reds: Potential pitchers and starting lineups
Can the Cardinals beat the Reds tonight and flip the tide?
After losing 6-1 to the Cincinnati Reds (58-61) in the opening game of their series, the St. Louis Cardinals (60-59) are currently only one game above.500. In this game, the offense struggled to put runners in scoring position, while Sonny Gray, the Cardinals’ ace, gave up six runs in a disastrous outing that included three home runs.
Though it’s promising for a bullpen that has been struggling lately that Kyle Leahy and Shawn Armstrong looked well in Gray’s place, the question remains if this Cardinal offense has what it takes to win games in the closing stages. While Gray’s performance yesterday was undoubtedly subpar, the offense is the one that keeps failing. The Cardinals might not be able to recover if they don’t make a swift correction in the situation.
Potential starting pitchers
Tonight is Erick Fedde’s third start for the Cardinals (8-5, 3.28 ERA). Fedde struggled in his first start against the Cubs, but he bounced back to pitch brilliantly against the Rays in his second start with the Cardinals, lasting five innings and giving up only one earned run. Fedde has to get out to a strong start for St. Louis in order to halt this poor run of baseball.
Tonight, Hunter Greene (8-4, 2.90 ERA) will open for the Reds. For Cincinnati, he’s been fantastic this season, so the Cardinals will have their work cut out for them if they hope to restart the offensive. The Cardinals put up a run on Greene and got him out of the game after only 4.2 innings pitched, even though they didn’t do a great job against him earlier this year.
