BLOCKBUSTER MOVE: Bills Stun NFL with Shocking QB Signing to Succeed Josh Allen in Game-Changing Roster Shake-Up

After their heartbreaking 32-29 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, which marked their fourth playoff defeat to Kansas City in just five years, the Buffalo Bills quickly turned their attention to the offseason.

On Wednesday, the team revealed via their official X (formerly Twitter) account that they had re-signed quarterback Shane Buechele to a one-year deal. The 27-year-old quarterback spent the 2024 season on injured reserve due to a neck injury sustained during the preseason. Before that, Buechele was a member of the Bills’ practice squad in 2023. He entered the NFL in 2021 as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent two seasons and earned a Super Bowl LIV ring, though he did not play in the game. After being waived by the Chiefs in 2023, Buechele joined the Bills’ practice squad and later signed a reserve/future contract.

Although Buechele has not seen any regular-season NFL action, his college career was notable. He threw for 11,660 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions while completing 63.1% of his passes at Texas and SMU. He also rushed for 478 yards and eight touchdowns over 56 games. His stellar 2019 season at SMU, where he passed for 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns, kept him on the radar of NFL teams.

Josh Allen can only do so much on his own, so the Bills are adding depth at quarterback. In the AFC Championship Game, Allen threw for 237 yards with a 65% completion rate (22/34) and two touchdowns, playing at the MVP level. The Bills continue to aim for their first Super Bowl appearance in spite of his best efforts.

The Bills signed tight end Zach Davidson to a reserve/future contract in addition to re-signing Buechele. After spending the previous season on the practice squad, Davidson now has the chance to contend for a roster spot during training camp and the offseason.
